OUR HISTORY
First Baptist Church East Point (FBCEP), founded in September of 1888, has a rich and diverse 131 year history that serves as a living testimony of God’s faithfulness and reconciliation from generation to generation. FBCEP’s history intertwines roots with “The Fellowship Group,” who organized from Christian Fellowship Baptist Church (CFBC), College Park, GA and first gathered in worship on Sunday, October 20, 2005 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in College Park, GA and moved to FBCEP in 2006. After serving as pastor during the organization of CFBC, Dr. Emmanuel L. McCall preceded Rev. Montele A. Crawford as our pastor. On Sunday, April 23, 2016, Dr. Emmanuel L. McCall Sr., came out of “semi-” retirement to serve as pastor of First Baptist Church East Point. On October 1, 2019, that mantle was passed to Rev. Kamau I. Welcher, who was installed as Pastor on Sunday, January 26, 2020.

OUR PASTOR
Rev. Kamau Welcher

Rev. Kamau Welcher, Pastor of First Baptist Church East Point, is a dynamic preacher, teacher, pastor, and founder of educational consulting company, Revelation Knowledge.

Originally from Augusta, GA, Rev. Welcher earned the Ronald E. McNair NASA full scholarship to Morehouse College and graduated cum laude with a BS in Mathematics. While at Morehouse College, he served as the Chaplain of the Morehouse Student Government Association. He entered graduate studies at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. This has fostered diverse opportunities, including studying in Israel and Palestine with the World Methodist Evangelism Institute. Rev. Welcher has served as Executive Pastor of Greenforest Community Baptist Church, Pastor of Students and Families at Lake Oconee Community Church, Director of the LOCC Greene/Putnam County Youth Alliance, and as Teacher and Minister at Stronghold Christian Church.

Known as a man of integrity, Rev. Welcher has a life call to transform lives – “from the cradle to the grave.” He provides counseling, staff development, and keynote addresses sessions in sacred and secular settings, and has served as Director of Young Adults Division, Teacher Trainer, and associate minister. While serving as a Chaplain for Emory University’s Wesley Woods Geriatric facility, he worked directly with patients and families facing physical and mental challenges in mature stages of life. He also fostered a mission partnership between Greenforest’s Young Adults and the Wesley Woods community. From PTA presidencies to coaching, he serves with passion while teaching and preaching with power.

For a decade, Rev. Welcher taught Mathematics in the Dekalb, Rockdale, and Gwinnett County School Systems, drastically increasing the number of students who met and exceeded the standards of the CRCT, End of Course Tests, and the Georgia High School Graduation Exam. In his last year of mathematics teaching under the CRCT testing system, 91% of his general education students passed at his Title 1 School. His creative and effective methods of teaching have earned various recognitions, and he is a Certified Math Teacher Trainer. He also managed to win 3 basketball championships in his last 5 years of coaching, including a perfect undefeated championship season and a 28-2 record along the way.

As Director of the LOCC Youth Alliance 501(c)(3), Rev. Welcher served over 170 students and their families from traditionally underserved communities of Greene and Putnam Counties. Fostering a community of graduates with purpose and direction, they developed character through educational & cultural enrichment, family & community partnerships, and career, vocation, and college exploration.

Rev. Welcher has a heart to serve, cover, love, lead, and protect God’s people. He is a highly sought after preacher, teacher, counselor, and inspirational keynote speaker for many ministerial services, including baby dedications, baptisms, communion services, weddings and funerals; anniversaries; training sessions; retreats; graduations; awards ceremonies and honors programs. His experience in brain-based learning and his humor undergird master teaching. He has organized Parental and Family Engagement Sessions, Youth Empowerment workshops, classes on financial empowerment and marriage, and he is “Somebody’s Preacher.”

Rev. Welcher is married to Dr. Adria Welcher, Director of General Education and Associate Professor of Sociology at Morehouse College. They have four wonderful children and make their home in the greater Atlanta area.
